The purpose of this page is to develop a resource of  'how to' videos and info for my new machine. It seems you need to watch a video on the complexities of anything you wish to do on this machine from changing the needle correctly to cleaning the thread cutter. It's a highly complex and sensitive beast! Helpful to me and possibly anyone else who owns one. There are a variety of different accents on offer and if you scroll right down, I am constructing a list of handy tips and tricks and solutions to problems as I discover them.

Stitch Tension
I worked it out. Classic case of all the info was in my brain just such a long time since I used it. Did the Libby Lehman test of the bobbin case - too tight. Loosened it by half a turn - that's a biggie - and voila, tension issues resolved!

Stitch Length
It has been impossible to find any information on what length to set your stitch when free motion quilting with the BSR foot. The quilt I have been working on I set at 3.35 but have decided it is too long. On one Bernina tutorial (if you are quick and don't blink) it says to use a stitch length of 3 but there is no explanation of why/why not longer/shorter etc? I have googled it to within an inch of my life and found little other than someone recommending 10 stitches per inch. This really confirms that my stitches are too big. And of course, there is the age-old problem of Americans who mix metric and 'the other kind of measurement' together all the time! I will drop my stitch down to 3.15 to complete this quilt but will experiment again before the next one. I have been having some tension issues and a too long stitch length may have contributed to it.

 I did find this:
Stitch number is based on millimetres per inch which is 25.4
Divide 25.4 by the machine setting to get stitches per inch.

25.4 / 3 = 8.47 stitch per inch
25.4 / 2.5 = 10.16 stitch per inch
25.4 / 2.1 = 12.1 stitch per inch
25.4 / 2 = 12.7 stitch per inch
25.4 / 1.5 = 16.93 stitch per inch

If you know the stitches per inch you want, the formula is:
25.4 mm / stitches =
25.4 / 10 = 2.5 setting 
25.4 / 12 = 2.1
25.4 / 16 = 1.6

Tips and Tricks

• Always thread your machine with the pressure foot up or else you will get thread jams - to do with the top thread not going in correctly as tension is on.
• When unthreading, always pull the thread down not up - cut at spool first. Pulling up can upset the threading discs and cause problems. 
• If the tension is not good when your first put the BSR on - eyelashes - take the bobbin out and check it, reload. This has cured bad tension for me when there is no apparent reason for it. 
• If you keep getting an error message saying your bobbin is empty try cleaning the sensor eye with a ear bud. Also clean out all the underneath and rethread the machine. If it keeps happening turn off the bobbin empty indicator.
